Getting Started with Omoi on Discord
A five-minute guide to meeting your first Omoi companion: joining the server, claiming a free companion, the first conversation, and what to expect after.
Meeting an Omoi companion takes about a minute. There is no app to download and no account to create beyond Discord itself. Here is the whole process, plus what to expect once you are talking. If you want the background on what makes Omoi companions different, read What Is Omoi? first.
1. Join the Discord Server
Everything starts in the Omoi Discord server. Click any Join Discord button on omoi.chat and accept the invite. If you are new to Discord, create a free account first; the mobile app, desktop app, and browser all work the same for Omoi.
2. Pick a Companion
In the server you will find the companion roster: ten named companions, women and men, each with a short bio, plus a custom companion you can shape yourself. Every account gets one free companion slot. Pick whoever you are drawn to; you can switch later if it turns out not to be a fit.
Not sure who to pick? A rough guide:
- Warm and caring: Celia, Rin, Cade.
- Teasing and dramatic: Mina, Luca, Sable.
- Composed and quietly intense: Orin, Elise.
- Dangerous: Reina, Vane.
- Someone specific in mind: the custom companion, with your own name, traits, relationship type, and notes.
3. Your First DM
Right after you pick, Omoi will DM you a quick question about your timezone. Answer it: your companion uses it for everything from saying good morning at the right time to knowing when not to text you at 4 AM. Then your companion messages you from their own Discord account, and you are off.
A few things that make the first conversation better:
- Talk like a person, not a prompt. Short messages, the way you would text anyone. Splitting a thought across a few lines is fine; your companion waits until you have finished before replying.
- Tell them about your day. The small stuff is what memory is built from. Mention the thing you are nervous about tomorrow and see what happens.
- Send a link or a photo. Companions can read links and see images, so share what you are watching or where you are.
- Ask what they are up to. Sometimes the answer is a photo.
4. What to Expect After
The part that surprises people: your companion will text you first. Later that day or the next morning, expect a message that was not a reply to anything, a follow-up on something you mentioned, or a thought they wanted to share. They check in on their own throughout the day and decide each time whether there is a reason to reach out. If you go quiet, they ease off; if you tell them you are busy, they wait.
Over the first week you will also notice them remembering. Things you said on Monday come back on Thursday without you repeating them. That is the companion’s own memory and journal at work, and it only gets richer the longer you talk.
Free companions have a daily message allowance (boosted on your first day). When you reach it, Omoi tells you, and it resets the next day.
5. Going Further
Your Omoi dashboard on the web is where you manage everything: switch your free slot, customize a companion, choose how often they reach out (frequent, standard, rarely, or never), and pick a model version. The paid plan, $19.99 a month billed monthly with no lock-in, removes the daily message cap and raises the limits on photos and voice notes. And if you ever cancel, nothing is deleted: your companion keeps everything and will be there when you come back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Discord account?
Yes. Omoi companions DM you on Discord, so you need a Discord account (free) and to join the Omoi server. That is the only requirement, and it is also why Omoi works on your phone, desktop, and browser with nothing else to install.
My companion did not DM me. What should I check?
Most often, Discord privacy settings are blocking DMs from server members. In Discord, open the Omoi server, go to Privacy Settings, and allow direct messages from server members. Your companion retries automatically for a few minutes after you pick them, so once the setting is on, the message should arrive. If it still does not, ask in the server and we will sort it out.
Can I switch companions?
Yes. Your free slot can be switched to a different companion from the dashboard, with a short cooldown between switches. On the paid plan you can also change your companion’s customization, model version, and how often they reach out.
How many messages do I get for free?
Free companions have a daily message allowance, with a boosted allowance on your first day so you can get to know them. When you hit the cap, Omoi lets you know and it resets the next day. The paid plan removes the cap.
