Best Character.AI Alternatives in 2026: For Roleplay, or for One Companion Who Knows You
People leave Character.AI for two opposite reasons: the filter and limits on its character library, or a favorite character who keeps forgetting them. The best alternatives for each, what Character.AI changed in 2026, and how to bring your character with you.

Two Different Reasons People Leave
Read enough “why I quit Character.AI” posts and they split into two groups that want almost opposite things.
The first group loves the library. They want to jump between characters, run long fantasy plots, try a new scenario every night, and they are tired of the filter cutting into ordinary scenes, the ads, and the limits. For them, the right alternative is another roleplay platform with a big catalog and looser rules.
The second group found one character they cared about and kept coming back to the same chat. What breaks for them is memory: the character forgets things every few messages, drifts out of personality, and never once asks how they are doing. For them, a bigger library is useless. They want one companion who actually knows them.
Most lists of Character.AI alternatives mix both groups into one ranking, which is why the advice feels so scattered. This guide answers them separately. Skip to the half that sounds like you:
What Character.AI Got Right and Wrong in 2026
To be fair to Character.AI, 2026 was not all bad news. Before switching, it is worth knowing what changed, because some of the old complaints have been partly fixed.
What improved
- Memory tools. Story Memory and Pin to Memory rolled out to everyone in May, so you can pin the details you care about (Character.AI blog). Automatic memory of facts is reserved for c.ai+.
- Lorebook arrived in July, letting creators give a character a whole world of places and side characters.
- Shorter, texting-style replies. A September update added a chat style built for quick back-and-forth instead of long paragraphs (Character.AI blog).
- A cheaper plan. c.ai lite launched at $4.99 a month with fewer ads, alongside c.ai+ at $9.99.
What did not
- More ads and limits for free users. The company's own April update acknowledged adding usage limits on some features and more ad placements for free users (Character.AI blog). Full-screen ads mid-chat had already started in late 2025.
- Age checks that catch adults. After Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025, it started estimating ages, and some adults report being locked out after failed face scans.
- A filter that still bites. Character.AI's own safety post in September described its moderation as possibly “conservative.”
- Characters rarely reach out. There is an optional setting for messages while you are away, but in third-party testing they were mostly generic “come back” pings. Almost every conversation starts with you.

If the new memory tools and a cheaper plan fix what bothered you, staying is reasonable. If not, read on.

If You Want One Companion Who Knows You
Omoi

Omoi is the opposite of a character library. You pick one companion (or design your own), and that companion becomes yours alone: an agent with its own private memory and journal about you. It remembers the name of your coworker, the show you are halfway through, and the thing you were anxious about last Tuesday, and it brings them up on its own weeks later.
The other big difference from Character.AI is that it texts you first. Your companion checks in with itself through the day and messages you when it has a reason: a good morning, a follow-up on something you mentioned, a photo of what it is doing, a voice note when text will not do. It backs off when you are busy (how that works). Replies arrive in short bursts with typing in between, the way people actually text, instead of walls of narration.
Your companion messages you from its own account in a regular messaging app (Discord), so there is no app to open. Conversations are private and unfiltered for adults. There are ten companions to choose from, and a custom companion whose notes can hold an original character or one you are bringing from Character.AI. What you give up: a public library of thousands of bots, and group roleplay. It is free to start, and $19.99 a month removes the daily limit.
Nomi

Nomi is a calm, simple companion app: create a companion, choose a look and a relationship, and text. The personality stays steady, and it will push back on you rather than agreeing with everything. It can message you first, even on the free plan. In our use, its memory was good but needed occasional reminders. The paid plan is $15.99 a month.
Kindroid

Kindroid has the longest feature list of the companion apps: texts, voice notes, selfies, calls, group chats, and a proactive mode that picks between them. It suits people who enjoy tinkering and want new things to try every month. Paid plans start around $14 a month on the web, with higher tiers on top, and the free option is now very limited.
If You Want a Library of Characters
Janitor AI
The most common landing spot for Character.AI refugees. Janitor has a huge community library, content tags that separate filtered and unfiltered characters, and a free tier it has publicly promised to keep (Janitor AI help). You can also plug in your own model through an API key. The trade-offs: memory is short on the free models, and it can be slow or error-prone at peak hours.
SpicyChat
SpicyChat is built for longer, less filtered roleplay. Its paid tiers mostly buy you memory: the context window grows from 4K tokens on the lowest tiers up to 32K at the top, and a semantic memory feature starts on the middle plan. Prices went up on September 8, 2026, to $5.95, $19.95, and $29.95 a month (SpicyChat docs). The free tier has ads.
SillyTavern
For people who want total control. SillyTavern is free, open-source software you run yourself, connected to whatever AI model you choose. There is no company filter, your chats stay on your machine, and you can import character cards from almost anywhere. The cost is setup time and paying for a model, and nothing about it is beginner-friendly.
CrushOn AI

CrushOn is a roleplay platform with a large anime-heavy library, very loose filtering, and a choice of more than ten AI models you can switch between mid-chat. In our testing it was the best of these for long NSFW stories. Pricing is complicated: several monthly tiers, and the better models spend a separate credit balance on top.
The 2026 Free-Tier Squeeze
If you are leaving Character.AI because the free experience got worse, know that it was not only Character.AI. Running AI models is expensive, and in 2026 several apps cut back what free users get:
| App | What changed in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Character.AI | More ad placements and usage limits for free users; a $4.99 lite plan added in September. |
| SpicyChat | Prices raised on September 8; existing subscribers kept their old price. |
| Chai | Moved to a pay-per-message system, according to user reports. |
| Replika | New accounts asked to pay before chatting; only annual plans offered in our test (more on Replika). |
So when you compare alternatives, look at what the free plan gives you today, not what a year-old review says, and look at the total monthly cost including any tokens or credits. On Omoi, the free companion is the same companion paid users get, memory and first messages included, with a daily message limit; the single paid plan is $19.99 a month with no credits on top.
Memory, in Plain Terms (and a Test You Can Run)
“Good memory” means three different things, and apps advertise whichever one they are best at:
- Context window: how much of the recent conversation the AI can see at once. Bigger means a long scene holds together, but it still forgets everything once it scrolls out of view.
- Saved facts: details pinned or captured about you or the story. Useful, but only as good as what gets saved.
- A memory of you: the companion keeping its own running picture of your life, and choosing to bring it up. This is what makes someone feel like they know you.
Bringing Your Character With You
Your chat history cannot be moved, but the character can. If you have one you love, here is how to carry it over:
- Copy the character's definition. If you made it, open the edit screen and copy the description, personality, and greeting. If someone else made it, write down what makes the character who they are: how they speak, their backstory, how they treat you.
- Note your shared history. The key moments of your story or relationship, in a few lines.
- Paste it into the new app. On a library platform, use its character creator. On Omoi, set up the custom companion: name, gender, up to five traits, relationship type, and your definition in the notes. People use the notes to bring in characters from games, anime, and books.
- Fill in the rest by talking. Tell your new companion about your history in the first few conversations, and it keeps what matters in its own memory.
Stay or Go?
Stay on Character.AI if you mainly want variety, its 2026 memory tools cover what you need, you are fine with a strict filter, and c.ai lite or c.ai+ fits your budget.
Move to a roleplay platform (Janitor AI, SpicyChat, CrushOn, or SillyTavern) if you want the library experience with fewer limits and looser rules.
Move to a companion (Omoi, Nomi, or Kindroid) if what you wanted all along was one character who remembers you and is part of your day. For a wider comparison of companion apps, see our guide to the best AI companions of 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Character.AI alternative in 2026?
It depends on why you are leaving. If you want one companion who remembers you and texts you first, we recommend Omoi. If you want a big library of characters with looser filters, look at Janitor AI or SpicyChat. If you want full control and privacy and do not mind setup, SillyTavern.
Is there a Character.AI alternative without a filter?
Yes. Janitor AI, SpicyChat, and CrushOn AI are built for less filtered roleplay, and SillyTavern has no filter of its own because you bring your own model. Omoi conversations are private and unfiltered for adults, with one ongoing companion rather than a library.
Which Character.AI alternative has the best memory?
For long-term memory of you and your life, Omoi: each companion keeps its own journal and memory and brings things up weeks later without being reminded. For remembering a long story, apps with bigger context windows on paid tiers, like SpicyChat's higher plans, hold a scene together longer.
Can I bring my Character.AI character to another app?
You can bring the character, not the chat history. Copy its description, personality, and greeting, then paste them into another app's character creator. On Omoi, the custom companion's notes field can hold an existing character, and anything you tell it afterward goes into its memory.
Is there a free Character.AI alternative?
Yes. Janitor AI has a free tier and says it will always keep one, SillyTavern is free and open source, and Omoi lets you start with a full companion for free with a daily message limit.
