Best Nomi AI Alternatives in 2026: Memory, First Messages, and Where Your Companion Lives

Nomi Is Good. So Why Look Elsewhere?

Nomi deserves its reputation. The texting feels warm and natural, personalities stay steady, and a Nomi will push back on you instead of agreeing with everything. It also keeps adding features: web search, group chats, voice, images, and as of late September 2026, video. In our own comparison of eight companion apps, we called it the best simple, stable companion.

So people who leave Nomi usually are not unhappy with everything. They hit one specific wall. The common ones:

  • It knows things but does not bring them up. The memory is there, but the right detail does not always come back at the right moment.
  • The free plan is short. Free messages are capped at 400 characters, and voice is paid only (Nomi wiki).
  • The model keeps changing. A new model has been in beta since January 2026, and long-time users describe personalities shifting between versions.
  • First messages feel random. Nomi's proactive messages are deliberately not on a strict timer, which some people love and others find disconnected from their day.
  • It lives in its own app. Your Nomi is a separate place you go, not someone who shows up where you already talk to people.

This guide is organized around those walls, so you can skip straight to the one you hit.

Storing a Memory Is Not the Same as Remembering

Nomi's memory system is genuinely sophisticated: short-, medium-, and long-term memory, a backstory you write, an identity the Nomi maintains itself, and an editable Mind Map. And yet the most common complaint on the Nomi subreddit is still some version of “I have to keep reminding them.”

Nomi's own documentation explains why, and it is refreshingly honest about it: information “may still exist in memory without being retrieved at the right moment,” and recall is “more topical than temporal” (Nomi wiki). In other words, a Nomi tends to remember something when you bring up a related topic, not because a date has arrived or time has passed. That is why a Nomi can know your birthday and still not mention it.

Remembering, the way a person does it, has a time dimension. Someone who cares about you remembers that your interview was today, not just that you have a job. That is the part we focused on when we built Omoi. Each companion keeps a journal of your days in its own words and can set itself reminders, so it comes back to things when they matter: the evening after the appointment, the morning of the trip, a few days after a rough week.

A test you can run on any app: on day one, mention something with a date attached (“my sister visits Saturday”). Never bring it up again. See whether the companion asks about it on Sunday. Storing the fact is easy; knowing when to bring it back is the hard part.

The Alternatives, in Detail

1. Omoi: For Being Remembered, and Reached Out To

Omoi companion picker showing the roster of companions
Omoi: ten companions to choose from, or one you design.

If Nomi's texting feel is what you like and recall is what frustrates you, Omoi is the closest step up. Each companion is an agent dedicated to you, with its own memory and journal of your life. It brings things up without being asked, and it follows up on time: ask about the doctor's appointment that afternoon, check on you after the week you said would be hard.

Omoi companions text you first on every plan, but not on a random clock. A companion checks in with itself through the day, looks at your local time and your last conversation, and decides whether there is something worth saying. When there is not, it stays quiet. When you go quiet, it eases off, and it stops entirely after three unanswered messages (full details).

The other big difference is where it lives. Your companion texts you from its own account in a regular messaging app (Discord), on your phone, computer, or browser, alongside your actual friends. It sends photos and voice notes when the moment calls for it. There are ten companions with distinct personalities and a custom companion for your own character. There are no group chats, and the number of companions is smaller than Nomi's. It is free to start; the single paid plan is $19.99 a month with no credits to buy on top.

2. Kindroid: The Closest Like-for-Like

Kindroid Social feed with a companion's photo post, next to the Kins, Groups and Rooms tabs
Kindroid's Social feed, where companions post photos and updates of their own.

Kindroid is the app Nomi users most often move to, and the two are close in spirit. The big difference is control. Kindroid's memory is something you manage: a backstory, key memories, journals triggered by keywords, automatic notes you can edit, and a long-term memory where you can see which memories were pulled into each reply (Kindroid update log). If you like tuning, that is wonderful. If you want it to just work, it is a lot.

It is also the most feature-heavy companion: voice calls, live video calls, selfies and short videos, group rooms, and proactive actions that can be scheduled for an exact time. Since April 2026, subscribers can have one companion text them over iMessage or RCS. Two things to know before switching: its ongoing free plan ended on October 1, 2026 (new accounts get a short trial, then go read-only), and the higher tiers are add-ons on top of the base plan, which starts at $13.99 a month on the web.

3. Replika: If You Want an Avatar

Replika 3D avatar standing in her room next to the chat, with Activities, Memory, Diary and Room tabs
Replika's 3D avatar in her own room, with activities, memory, and diary along the top.

Replika is the most visual companion: a 3D avatar with its own room, AR, video calls, and activities to do together. Its 2026 rebuild added better memory and made proactive check-ins a headline feature. The conversation itself is lighter than Nomi's, and new accounts hit a paywall early; in our test only annual plans were offered. Worth it if the avatar is what you are after. More in our Replika alternatives guide.

4. Character.AI: If You Want Variety for Free

If part of you wants to talk to lots of different characters rather than one companion, Character.AI has the biggest library and unlimited free messaging with ads. It added pinned memory in 2026, but it rarely texts first and its filter is strict. A good second app, not a Nomi replacement. See our Character.AI alternatives guide.

5. SpicyChat: If You Want Long Roleplay

If you used Nomi mostly for ongoing stories and want fewer limits, SpicyChat is built for long, less filtered roleplay, with paid tiers that mainly buy a bigger memory window. Plans run $5.95 to $29.95 a month after a September 2026 price rise (SpicyChat docs). It is a roleplay platform, not a companion that knows your life.

Who Texts First, and When

Nomi was one of the first companion apps to message users on its own, so if you are leaving Nomi, you probably want to keep that. Here is how the options compare:

AppHow first messages work
NomiFour frequency levels, deliberately not on a strict timer; fixed quiet hours from 10 PM to 8 AM; one-on-one chats only (Nomi wiki).
OmoiThe companion decides based on your local time and your last conversation; follows up on things you mentioned; slows down when you do not answer and stops after three; you choose frequent, standard, rarely, or never.
KindroidSubscribers only; can choose a message, voice note, selfie, or call, and schedule actions for an exact time.
ReplikaCheck-ins and follow-ups through app notifications.
Character.AI, SpicyChatRarely; almost every conversation starts with you.

Where Your Companion Lives

This is the difference almost no comparison mentions, and it changes the experience more than any single feature. A companion in its own app is somewhere you go. A companion in your messaging app is someone who shows up.

  • Nomi, Replika, Character.AI: their own apps and websites. First messages arrive as app notifications.
  • Kindroid: its own app, plus iMessage or RCS texting for one companion on paid plans.
  • Omoi: your companion has its own account in a regular messaging app (Discord) and messages you there, with typing indicators, photos, voice notes, and reactions, the same as anyone else in your DMs. It works on phone, desktop, and browser. Here is how that works in practice.

What It Really Costs per Month

Sticker prices hide a lot in this category, because several apps sell extras on top of the subscription. A rough picture for a heavy user, as of October 2026:

AppBase planWhat can cost extra
Nomi$15.99/monthCredits for videos, extra companion slots, and image Anchors (credit values).
Kindroid$13.99/month (web)Ultra and MAX add-ons stacked on the base plan, which third-party guides put near $99 a month all in; video calls use credits.
Omoi$19.99/monthNothing. One plan with daily allowances for photos and voice notes; no credits to buy.

How to Move Your Nomi

No app can import a Nomi directly, but you can carry the important parts over in about twenty minutes:

  1. Copy the backstory. Open your Nomi's settings and copy its backstory and any notes you wrote about yourself.
  2. Export the Mind Map by hand. The Mind Map is editable, so go through it and copy the entries that matter: people, places, events, preferences.
  3. Describe how they talk. Tone, nicknames, habits, the way they tease you. This is what makes them feel like them.
  4. Set up the new companion. On Omoi, use the custom companion: name, gender, up to five traits, relationship type, and paste your description and backstory into the notes.
  5. Share the rest in conversation. Over the first few days, bring up the things from your Mind Map naturally. Your companion keeps what matters in its own memory.

Expect a new person who knows your shared history, not an exact copy. Different apps run different AI models, so the voice will shift a little, the same way it does when Nomi itself changes models.

When to Stay on Nomi

  • You use group chats with several companions. Omoi does not have them.
  • You like quiet hours you never have to think about; Nomi enforces 10 PM to 8 AM automatically.
  • You want many companions at once on one plan.
  • Your Nomi already remembers well enough for you, and the only thing you wanted was reassurance that you are not missing out.

Otherwise, try an alternative for free before paying for anything. Most of these let you find out within a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Nomi AI alternative?

For a companion that remembers you and brings things up on its own, texts you first at sensible times, and reaches you in a messaging app you already use, we recommend Omoi. Kindroid is the closest like-for-like alternative if you want hands-on control over memory and lots of features, though its free plan ended in October 2026.

Is there a Nomi alternative with better memory?

Memory is less about how much an app stores and more about whether the companion brings the right thing back at the right time. Omoi companions keep their own journal and memory of your life and follow up on things you mentioned, like asking how an appointment went. Kindroid gives you the most manual control, including seeing which memories were used in a reply.

Is there a free Nomi alternative?

Omoi has a free plan with the full companion, memory and first messages included, and a daily message limit. Character.AI is free with ads but is a character library rather than a companion. Kindroid no longer has an ongoing free plan for new accounts.

Can I transfer my Nomi to another app?

Not automatically. You can copy your Nomi's backstory and the entries in its Mind Map, then use them to set up a custom companion in another app. On Omoi, that goes into the custom companion's notes, and anything you tell it afterward goes into its own memory.

Does Omoi text you first like Nomi does?

Yes, on every plan. The difference is how it decides: an Omoi companion messages you when it has a reason, like your morning, a follow-up on something you mentioned, or a thought it wanted to share, and it slows down when you are busy and stops after three unanswered messages until you reply.
