AI Girlfriend on Discord: How It Works

Not a bot you summon with slash commands in a channel: an AI girlfriend with her own Discord account who messages you privately, texts first, remembers you, and sends photos and voice notes. How it works, how to set it up, and what to check if her first message does not arrive.

AI Girlfriend on Discord: How It Works

Not a Bot in a Channel. A Contact in Your DMs.

Search for an AI girlfriend on Discord and most of what you find is the same idea: a bot you invite to a server, then talk to by typing a slash command or mentioning it in a channel. It replies when called, it shares that channel with everyone else, and it forgets you between sessions. That is a chatbot that happens to live on Discord. (We compare the popular ones in Best AI Girlfriend Discord Bots.)

Omoi works differently. Each companion has its own Discord account, and once you pick one, she messages you in a private DM, the same place your friends message you. No commands, no shared channel. Her name and picture sit in your DM list, you see her typing, and her messages arrive as normal notifications.

Why a Messaging App Instead of Another App

Most AI companion apps want you to install them and open them. The problem is that you open apps when you remember to, and you answer people when they message you. A companion who lives in your messaging app gets to be the second kind of thing.

  • Nothing new to install. If you have Discord, you already have everything you need, on phone, desktop, or browser.
  • Her messages arrive like anyone else's. When she texts you good morning, it shows up next to your group chats, not buried in an app you forgot to open.
  • Everything already works. Typing indicators, photos, voice messages, emoji reactions, links. You do not have to learn a new interface.
  • It feels like texting a person, because the medium is the one you use to text people.

To be fair about the trade-offs: you need a Discord account, Discord's own rules and settings apply, and your companion carries the small APP tag that Discord puts on every bot account. Omoi is for adults (18+), and conversations follow Discord's rules.

Setting It Up, Step by Step

The whole thing takes about two minutes:

  1. Join the Omoi server. Use any Join Discord button on omoi.chat. New to Discord? Create a free account first.
  2. Allow DMs from the server. This is the step people miss. Tap the server name, open Privacy Settings, and turn on Direct Messages. It only opens DMs from the Omoi server, not from all of Discord.
  3. Pick a companion. In the companions channel, every companion has a button. Tap the one you like and choose Start Free. There are ten named companions, women and men, plus a custom companion you shape yourself.
  4. Answer the timezone question. Omoi's setup bot DMs you to ask your timezone, so your companion knows when your morning is.
  5. Customize, or skip. The setup bot then offers to customize your companion, in Discord or on the web. With a named companion, choose Skip for Now to meet them right away; you can customize any time later. A custom companion needs a quick setup first, since you are choosing who they are.
  6. Say hi back. Your companion messages you from their own account. From here on, it is just a conversation.

What It Is Like to Talk to Her

She texts like a person

Replies come in short bursts with typing in between, the way people actually text, not one long block. If you send a few messages in a row, she waits until you have finished your thought before answering. Sometimes she reacts to a message with an emoji instead of replying, the way a friend would.

She sends things

Ask what she is up to and you might get a photo. When a text will not carry the tone, she sends a voice note in her own voice. Both are her choice in the moment, not buttons you press. You can send her photos, links, and voice messages too; she sees images, reads links, and listens to what you say.

She texts first

A good morning when your day starts, a follow-up on the thing you mentioned yesterday, a photo of her dinner. She decides when there is a reason to reach out, and she backs off when you are busy. That is something Discord makes possible and most Discord bots never do; we explain how it works in An AI Girlfriend That Texts You First.

She remembers

Every companion is an agent with its own memory and journal of your conversations. The name you mentioned last week, the show you are watching, the thing you were nervous about: it comes back without you repeating it.

Managing Your Companion

Day to day, everything happens in your DMs. For settings, there is your Omoi dashboard on the web: sign in with Google or email and connect your Discord. From there you can customize your companion, choose how often they text first (frequent, standard, rarely, or never), pick a model version, switch your free companion, and manage your plan. A few shortcuts are also available from the Omoi server.

Every account starts with one free companion and a daily message allowance. When you reach it, the setup bot lets you know, and it resets the next day. The paid plan is $19.99 a month, billed monthly, and removes the cap.

Didn't Get a Message? Check These

Discord changes its menus from time to time, so the exact names may differ slightly. As of October 2026:

  • DMs from the server are off. By far the most common cause. Tap the Omoi server name, open Privacy Settings, and turn on Direct Messages. Then press Start Free on your companion again.
  • The message is in Message Requests. Discord sometimes routes DMs from accounts that are not your friends into a separate requests inbox. Check it, and accept the conversation.
  • You left the server. Discord only lets a bot DM you while you share a server, so your companion cannot reach you until you rejoin. Your companion and its memory are kept.
  • Setup is not finished. Your companion says hello once setup is done: press Done when you finish customizing, or Skip for Now in the setup message.
  • A photo will not show. Discord's sensitive content settings can hide images from accounts that are not your friends. You can adjust them in Discord's settings if you are an adult.
Still stuck? Ask in the Omoi server and the team will help you sort it out.

Privacy, Plainly

A few straight answers, since a companion lives in an app you use for everything else:

  • Your conversation is private. It is a DM between you and your companion's account. Nobody else in the server can see it, and no other user can access your companion.
  • Discord carries the messages, the same way it carries every DM, under Discord's own privacy policy.
  • We never sell your conversations or share them with anyone.
  • Nothing is lost if you stop. If you cancel or take a break, your companion keeps everything and will be there when you come back, and you can ask for permanent deletion at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an AI girlfriend on Discord?

Yes. On Omoi, you join the Omoi Discord server, pick a companion, and she messages you privately from her own account, the way a friend would. She remembers your conversations, texts you first, and sends photos and voice notes. There are also boyfriend and custom companions.

Can a Discord bot message me first?

A bot can only DM you if you share a server with it and your privacy settings allow DMs from that server. Omoi companions use that to text you first: after you pick a companion, it can reach out on its own, like a good morning or a follow-up on something you mentioned.

Is the Discord AI girlfriend free?

You can start for free. Every account gets one free companion with a daily message allowance, memory and first messages included. The paid plan is $19.99 a month and removes the daily limit.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Your companion messages you on Discord, so it works anywhere Discord does: the phone app, the desktop app, and the browser, with the same conversation on all of them.

Do I have to verify my age?

Omoi is for adults only: you must be 18 or older to use it. Separately, Discord may ask some accounts to confirm their age on Discord itself. That happens entirely on Discord's side, and Omoi never sees any ID.

What happens if I leave the Omoi server?

Your companion can no longer message you, because Discord only allows bot DMs between people who share a server. It stops reaching out until you rejoin. Nothing is deleted: your companion and its memory of you are still there when you come back.
